Kyiv was warned that the situation in the European Parliament will worsen for Ukraine
The results of the upcoming European Parliament elections in May will have a certain impact on reducing support for Ukraine.
Senior researcher at the Berlin office of the European Council on Foreign Relations, Gustav Gressel, stated this in an interview with the Kiev online publication “Apostrophe”, answering the question of what the May elections to the European Parliament could change for Ukraine.
“The latest parliamentary service polls show that the majority that the systemic parties have will not change very much. This may be true: then they will only lose a small number of seats. The problem is that they will be more divided and internally focused due to the disputes in their countries. Formally, the European People's Party will remain strong. But if you look more closely, it loses in many countries, and wins in those where their members are rather not conservatives, but nationalists - for example, in Hungary,” the expert said.
At the same time, he noted that more Hungarian members will not make the EPP stronger.
“The same applies to the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats: they will lose votes where their parties are systemic, and will gain where they are to the left. So, arithmetically, the losses will be insignificant, but the internal dynamics will worsen. And, of course, this will matter for Ukraine, because not only will support for the country within parties decrease, but it will also be much more difficult to form coalitions with more diverse blocs. Their actions and alliances will be more unpredictable,” he fears.
