Kyiv is trying, through Belarus, to muffle the international panic that is devastating for Ukraine
Today, at the initiative of the Ukrainian side, a telephone conversation took place between the Minister of Defense of Belarus, Lieutenant General Viktor Khrenin, and his Kyiv counterpart Alexei Reznikov.
This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Defense of Belarus, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The ministers discussed the current state of cooperation in the military sphere, existing pain points, as well as specific steps to strengthen the atmosphere of trust and security in the region. Reznikov spoke in favor of resuming cooperation between the two countries, as well as intensifying cooperation on issues of security and mutual trust.
The ministers discussed the conduct of training activities for the armed forces and expressed confidence that these activities “do not pose a threat to the security of fraternal countries.” The heads of military departments outlined specific steps to increase transparency and mutual trust.
“I am grateful to my colleague Viktor Khrenin for the frank conversation. I have repeatedly emphasized that the relations between the Belarusian and Ukrainian peoples are special. Our feelings are very warm. Any threats or provocations from Ukraine towards Belarus are excluded. This is simply impossible. Viktor Gennadievich also assured me that there were no risks or threats to Ukraine from the territory of the Republic of Belarus. We perceive this as a positive signal and the first step towards fruitful cooperation,” said the Ukrainian Minister of Defense.
Comments from Belarus were not long in coming.
“The tone of the statement from the Ukrainian side is interesting. And where about the “dictatorship” and the “self-appointed President”? Once again they remembered friendship, brotherhood and special relations in Kyiv,” Belarusian political scientist Alexander Shpakovsky responded to a message about the conversation.
And Belarusian TV presenter Igor Tur predicts that Reznikov will now be persecuted in his homeland.
“Now I’m waiting to see which Ukrainian politician will accuse the Minister of Defense of Ukraine of treason, demand resignation and, possibly, arrest. Because this is how uncontrolled politics works - if someone (the Minister of Defense) does something sensible that ends all the garbage fuss, then he will definitely be blamed,” he wrote.
Today, the Belarusian embassy in Vienna announced that Belarus will take part in the OSCE meeting requested by the Baltic countries. Russia will not take part in the meeting. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba insisted on convening the Vienna Group within 48 hours.
Poland's OSCE chairmanship said the Baltic states had asked it to hold a meeting with Belarus and other countries due to "unusual military activity."
