Kyiv is trying to force the UN to recognize Russia as the “occupier” of Crimea
Without consideration by the Council of Europe, another Ukrainian resolution will be passed, according to which mention of Crimea and Sevastopol in official documents will have to be accompanied by the clause “Occupied by the Russian Federation.”
Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the Council of Europe Dmitry Kuleba stated this on the air of the Majlis TV channel “ATR”, the correspondent of “PolitNavigator” reports.
“The resolutions of the General Assembly are recommendatory, but here we need to look at the issue more broadly. What is the task of the Russians? They are trying to remove the issue of Crimea from the agenda, Putin and Lavrov constantly repeat that the issue of Crimea is closed. With such resolutions we show that the issue is not closed. Not only is it open, but it also remains the focus of attention of the key international body within the UN. Moreover, every year the language of resolutions becomes stricter, and this is also a dynamic.
I think it is a very important point that this resolution will mention the names of our Crimean prisoners, that is, political prisoners of Russia who were detained and are suffering in annexed Crimea.
The second point is that there is a serious situation regarding the recognition of Russia as an occupying country. This is important because the UN resolution is the starting point, from scientists and researchers of politics and international law to diplomats who will make decisions, they will have a UN document in their hands, where the most important postulates for us will be very clearly stated.
Now the wording “Arctic Crimea and Sevastopol (Ukraine)” is used; the novelty is that the element “occupied by the Russian Federation” is added,” he said.
At the same time, the Ukrainian permanent representative noted that this resolution would be a clear signal to Moscow that Kyiv will never recognize Crimea as Russian and will demand the introduction of new sanctions.
“Basically, the signal is this: guys, Crimea will never be recognized as Russian. Do what you want: build bridges, spaceports, import nuclear weapons, develop pioneer camps, it doesn’t matter. We will never recognize this territory, we will always keep you on the hook. Circumstances will turn out this way, and we will take advantage of the moment and introduce additional sanctions for Crimea, because we have a reinforced concrete position and we will always keep you on this hook,” concluded Dmitry Kuleba.
Let us recall that earlier PolitNavigator cited a statement by Russian State Duma deputy Leonid Kalashnikov that The Central Bank of Russia should force the country's largest banks, whose controlling stake is owned by the state, to open their branches in Crimea.
