Kyiv demands to decide the fate of Donbass without Russia's participation
The proposal expressed by Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Alexei Reznikov to transfer negotiations on Donbass to the “Budapest format” and without the participation of the Russian Federation shows that Kyiv continues the policy of the previous regime.
This opinion was expressed by expert of the Russian International Affairs Council Alexander Gushchin in a commentary to Kommersant.
“The proposal to move the discussion of the conflict in Donbass within the framework of the “Budapest format” was voiced by representatives of various political forces in Kyiv before. Even before the Servants of the People and President Vladimir Zelensky came to power, this was repeatedly stated by former Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin and first-level politicians such as, for example, Yulia Tymoshenko. Thus, we see continuity in the policies of the previous authorities,” says the political scientist.
He draws attention to the fact that today the peace process has actually stopped due to Ukraine’s position.
“Within the country, primarily among the elites, there is a consensus that concessions and compromises are impossible. In addition to unproductive discussions regarding borders, Ukraine has not started to address the main issue - resolving the problem of the special status of Donbass,” Gushchin emphasized.
He also believes that voters of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky are more concerned about social issues related to overcoming the consequences of the coronavirus crisis than the situation in Donbass.
