Kyiv is furious over a photo of a French MP kissing the monument to “Polite People” in Crimea
The Ukrainian delegation to PACE sent a letter to the President of the Assembly, Pedro Agramont, expressing protest against the visit to Crimea by a delegation of members of the French Parliament, who today, at the celebration of Fleet Day in Sevastopol, announced the possibility of recognition of the Russian peninsula by the new composition of the French Parliament.
The Ukrainian side was especially irritated by a published photograph of a deputy from France kissing the monument to “Polite People,” erected in the center of Simferopol in honor of the Russian military, who ensured the peaceful reunification of Crimea with its historical homeland.

“It is with deep disappointment that we received the news about another illegal visit to Crimea by a group of French deputies led by PACE delegate Thierry Mariani.
On behalf of the entire Ukrainian delegation, I declare that we are outraged by the blatant disregard for Ukrainian and international legislation, in which Mariani has proven himself to be a repeat offender. We do not intend to respect and encourage the rights of politicians to demonstratively ignore the laws and disrespect member states of the Council of Europe.
The published photo with the monument to the so-called “little green men” only proves the deliberate expression by French politicians of disrespect for the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
On the other hand, we regret that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, after a similar “visit” to Crimea a year ago by three representatives of France in PACE, was unable to establish rules that would regulate respect for international and national legislation on the part of PACE delegates. ...all of this together undermines confidence in the Assembly itself as a body that guards democracy, human rights and the rule of law,” says a statement issued by Verkhovna Rada deputy Georgy Logvinsky, representing the extremist Majlis.
