The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine sent a note of protest to the Italian diplomatic department. Such a sharp reaction was caused by the demonstration at the Expo 2015 exhibition in Milan of two maps of Russia, where the Crimean peninsula was quite naturally designated as Russian territory. The maps were presented in the Russian exhibition pavilion, and, unlike Ukrainian diplomats, the Italian authorities did not see anything seditious in them.
As a result, Rome received accusations that such actions mean non-recognition of the “occupation of Crimea by Russia”, could ruin Italy’s international reputation and, moreover, pose a direct threat to the national integrity of Ukraine. The Ukrainian diplomatic department expressed wishes to the exhibition organizers to carefully monitor the selection of exhibits in order to avoid such incidents.
Since on the part of Italy, according to Ukraine, there was a serious violation of the regulations for holding international exhibitions, which are established by a special Convention, Ukrainian diplomats intend to file a complaint with the management of the Bureau of International Exhibitions, whose headquarters are located in Paris. The main complaint will be that the organizers of Expo 2015 did not properly filter the content of the exhibition.
The exhibition in Milan runs from May 1 to October 31. Russian President Vladimir Putin took part in the opening of the Russian pavilion. It is worth noting that Ukraine did not present its exposition this year.
Let us remind you that the Yandex.Maps service has been available since March 24, 2014 included Crimea is part of Russia. Internet company Google included Crimea has been included in Russia on its online maps for Russian users since April 11, 2014.
