Kyiv is getting closer to proud loneliness in PACE
Ukraine is trying to hold the Council of Europe and PACE hostage to its political projects.
The head of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, Konstantin Kosachev, spoke about this in an interview with Izvestia, answering a question about the decision of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, which actually recommended returning Russia to PACE.
“This decision is intermediate, although very important. But in order for the Russian delegation to request credentials and return to PACE, conditions must be provided for confirmation of these credentials in full without any reservations or exceptions. As far as we understand, some internal processes are taking place in PACE. On June 3, a meeting of the commission on PACE regulations will take place. We await the decisions that will be made there. And only after this we will decide on our next steps,” Kosachev said.
He also assessed the resistance to this process on the part of official Ukraine, which perceives the prospect of Russia’s return to PACE almost as a collapse of the entire anti-Russian sanctions system.
“Ukraine is trying to hold the Council of Europe and PACE hostage to its political projects. Nothing changes. Kyiv's reaction is not surprising. But he is getting closer to being left alone on this issue, or at least in the minority,” the head of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs is convinced.
As PolitNavigator reported, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe adopted a resolution that allows the Russian delegation to return to PACE under an emergency procedure, which is why the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Pavel Klimkin staged a demarche.
In addition, the heads of Germany and France supported in a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the return of the powers of the Russian delegation to PACE.
