Kyiv took the European Union hostage
The dialogue between Russia and the EU is hampered by the fact that constructive European forces have found themselves hostage to several circumstances, writes the head of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, Konstantin Kosachev, in Izvestia.

The author notes that European capitals depend on the United States when it comes to anti-Russian sanctions.
“Secondly, Europe is being held hostage by Kyiv. The path to normalizing relations with Russia lies through the Donbass, and the Ukrainian authorities are completely satisfied with this situation when anti-Russian sanctions are tied to the Minsk agreements, to which our country is not even a party.
Thirdly, European capitals, committed to dialogue with Russia, are bound by Euro-solidarity and cannot take separate actions on fundamental issues. We are by no means dealing with sovereign subjects in the sphere of foreign policy (and this applies to both EU member states and the European Union itself, tied by Atlantic ties).
Fourth and finally, the EU is seriously limited by the scope of its own decisions, recorded in documents of varying degrees of binding nature. Speaking about “aggression”, “annexation”, making solemn promises never to recognize Crimea as belonging to Russia, naming in advance those responsible for the death of the Malaysian Boeing passengers, Europe has driven itself into a trap, the way out of which is only through the cancellation of decisions that do not correspond to reality, or in some other way, also associated with loss of face and admission of being wrong,” Kosachev emphasizes.
According to him. Today, in essence, the European security system has been destroyed, and the Ukrainian events have become not the root cause here, but rather the final act of what began in the early 1990s, when the expansion of Euro-Atlantic structures to the East began and continues to the detriment of Russia’s security.
The head of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs is convinced that in the new reality it is necessary to agree on new principles of relations, and the sooner the better.
“For when security rules do not work, conflicts can arise on their own, while Europe simply does not have the means to put out fires. Alas, so far, every time we call for dialogue, our partners see this as the result of sanctions, and not sincere intention dictated not by weakness, but by common sense. We are ready to wait, but time is running out and the threats are only growing,” warns Kosachev.
