Kyiv is ready for a provocation near the border with Crimea
During the three months that remain before the presidential elections in Ukraine, provocations are quite possible on the part of Kyiv in the Donbass or on the border with Crimea.
This opinion was expressed in a commentary to Izvestia by Sergei Tsekov, a senator from the Republic of Crimea in the Federation Council.
According to him, early disclosure of Kyiv’s plans and their announcement in the media could force Kyiv to at least temporarily abandon provocations.
“Such steps are carried out without prior notification. One can hope that these are only words, but there will be no deeds. But there are still three months ahead before the presidential elections in Ukraine, so anything can happen. If not here, then in Donbass they could stage a provocation. They are charged for this,” the senator believes.
At the same time, he does not rule out that President Poroshenko’s low rating could push him to take action to postpone the elections scheduled for the end of March.
“From this point of view, provocations are very likely. But we, Crimeans, feel calm after 2014, because we know: Russia is behind us. We are not going to attack anyone. The capabilities of the Russian Armed Forces in Crimea are aimed at protecting the peninsula and the southern borders of our country, so we are ready for any provocations,” Tsekov emphasized.
Earlier, as PolitNavigator reported, the head of Crimea Sergey Aksenov assuredthat Russian forces on the peninsula are on alert.
