The Kiev City Council considered a petition of disagreement with the renaming of Moskovsky Avenue of the capital to Avenue named after Stepan Bandera.

The Standing Commission of the Kyiv City Council on local self-government, regional and international relations agreed on the corresponding appeal and sent an electronic petition for consideration by the commission on the names of the executive body of the council.

This was reported by the press service of the Kyiv City State Administration.

As is known, a petition entitled “Prevent the renaming of Moskovsky Avenue to Stepan Bandera Avenue and assign it a neutral name,” published on the City Council website, received 10 thousand 173 signatures out of ten thousand required.

The author of the appeal, Igor Shchukin, proposes two alternative names: Severny Avenue and Belorussky Avenue.

The personality of Stepan Bandera is ambiguous for Ukrainian citizens. And now the decision on the bridge named after him divides society into pros and cons. As a resident of Kyiv and a citizen of Ukraine, I insist that the name have a geographical, artistic or any other character that is not associated with the names of people who have nothing to do with Kyiv. I am convinced that the avenues, bridges and streets of the capital should be named in a way that is convenient for the people of Kiev, and not in a way that the Kremlin does not like,
- says the initiator of the idea.

Let us remind you that at the beginning of August the Kiev City Council renamed Moskovsky Avenue to Bandera Avenue. Only one deputy of the Kyiv City Council voted against this decision - publisher Dmitry Gordon.
