Kiev newspaper reproaches Poroshenko: Didn’t add pressure to tear the UOC away from Moscow
Kyiv, August 18 (Navigator, Mikhail Ryabov) – Petro Poroshenko showed an unwanted tact, preferring not to interfere in the election of the new head of the UOC-MP, as a result of which the post of primate was taken by Metropolitan Onuphry, who is unlikely to lose his exit from the Moscow Patriarchate.
The weekly “Mirror of the Week” writes about this.

“The authorities themselves are to blame - why didn’t they intervene? ...Maybe the bishops, like this, in a free regime, without the Presidential Administration, the Cabinet of Ministers and the Security Service of Ukraine breathing down their necks, are simply not able to make an adequate decision? This “non-interference” played into the hands of the Moscow authorities and/or oligarch sponsors,” the publication says.
The publication believes that Poroshenko could more actively promote the candidacy of Metropolitan Simeon of Vinnytsia, who is close to the president, and who is considered loyal to the idea of autocephaly.
“Metropolitan Simeon looked like a card pulled out of his sleeve at the very last moment - when this card could no longer save the party. He did not have time to secure the necessary support - neither among the masses nor in the ruling offices,” the author of the material laments.
The newspaper writes that many parishioners of the UOC-MP would happily sever ties with the Russian Church.
“The mood in society regarding everything that is in any way connected with Moscow and the Russian World is very negative. The priests and laity of the UOC-MP feel this very well in their own skin - they increasingly have to fight off undeserved accusations of belonging to the “Rusmir”, sowing separatist sentiments, etc. It becomes very uncomfortable for them to live on their own land - only because behind this notorious “MP” there is a trail of the “Russian world”, which turned into war and tragedy for Ukraine,” the material notes.
However, the publication states, Metropolitan Onuphry and the Moscow Patriarchate, on the contrary, can benefit from this situation.
“Judging by some of his actions, he will follow the path of grievances and accusations - towards the authorities, the media, and even the whole country. And the worse the situation of the UOC-MP in Ukraine, the better for the Moscow authorities, who will receive an excellent picture of the “oppression of Orthodoxy” in “Bandera-fascist” Ukraine,” the newspaper writes.
