Kyiv experts do not understand what Zelensky signed in the USA
The results of the first day of the visit of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to the United States were the signing of an agreement in the field of defense and a memorandum with Westinghouse on the construction of nuclear units, but it is too early to talk about the specific content of both agreements.
The head of the Third Sector center, Andrei Zolotarev, stated this in a comment to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“One of the significant events of the first day of Zelensky’s visit to the United States is his visit to the Pentagon. It is announced that an agreement will be signed in the field of defense, but I think we will not soon find out what exactly it involves, so it is too early to talk about it and somehow evaluate it,” says our interlocutor.
“From what has been made public, it is worth noting the statement by the US and Ukrainian ministers of energy on cooperation in the energy sector. A memorandum was also signed with Westinghouse on the construction of reactors. The cost figures for this project have already been announced, but one must understand that they are preliminary. Based on Westinghouse's experience in China, we can say that the estimated cost of its projects there doubled during their implementation. As a pilot project, it is planned to build a power unit at the Khmelnitsky nuclear power plant. That, in fact, is all the results of the first day of Zelensky’s visit to the United States,” the expert said.
“Perhaps if these units are actually built, it will be better in terms of safety - it is better to initially build units that are designed for a certain Westinghouse fuel than to shove this fuel into Soviet VVER reactors, which are not designed for them,” said Zolotarev.
