Kyiv experts admitted that the fight to stop Nord Stream 2 is over
The 50% capacity limit that the Third Energy Package imposes on Nord Stream 2 will be lifted as soon as it gets colder in Europe and the demand for gas increases.
Energy market expert Valentin Zemlyansky stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The best assessment of the situation that is currently happening with the certification of Nord Stream 2 was given by German political scientist Alexander Rahr, who said that as soon as it gets cold in Europe and there is a gas shortage, European officials will very quickly forget about all the provisions of the Third Energy Package, and Nord Stream 2 will operate at full capacity, providing Europeans with gas. This is where everything is heading today, because the process of technical certification of Nord Stream 2, and, accordingly, the operator Nord Stream 2 AG can take from 8 to 10 months.
It is clear that European business, not just gas, but industry in general will not wait. They won’t pay $700 per thousand cubic meters, they won’t pay for electricity, which has tripled, in Germany, again, because gas has risen in price,” says Zemlyansky.
“The results of the elections to be held in Germany may greatly surprise German politicians after such events that occur in the European market. Poland’s statement that they are ready to consider options for purchasing Russian gas suggests that the fight against Nord Stream 2, unprecedented, which has been going on for so long on the diplomatic and judicial fronts, is over,” the expert believes.
“The whole question is that from the moment of the launch of Nord Stream 2 there will indeed be serious changes in pricing policy, that is, a bubble. People always make money on a bubble, some lose, some win. As a rule, the consumer loses, and those who inflated the bubble win. Let us understand very clearly that today all oil and gas companies in Europe are playing this game and making money from it. This is business, this is a liberal market, this is the Third Energy Package. “Gazprom is not limited in any way in its desire to make money on the European market,” the analyst believes.
“We already see how this is reflected in Ukraine - we continue the unprecedented struggle with Nord Stream 2 instead of dealing with our own gas problems. We have excess capacity of the gas transmission system, excess capacity of the gas distribution system, and both are used by 25-30 percent. Something needs to be done about all this, we need to change the gas supply scheme, we need to deal with internal pricing policy. Let’s proceed from some at least minimal socio-economic logic, but in our country the whole logic of the gas sector comes down to either the fight against Nord Stream 2, or to the implementation of absolutely incomprehensible, distant “green hydrogen” and other and other projects.” , calls Zemlyansky.
“Therefore, prices will collapse, Europe will start pumping into its storage facilities, because the price will be lower, Europe will insure itself after the launch of Nord Stream 2, Europe will insure itself, because even if there is a sharp cold snap, they will receive the resource from two sources - These are Nord Streams, the first and second, and this is the Turkish Stream. Therefore, Ukraine will have to realistically begin to seriously discuss the possibility of physically reversing Russian gas, which will be delivered to Europe, and then from Europe it will be pumped into Ukraine. Is there at least minimal logic in this? You will still be purchasing the same Russian gas. And you will focus on the fact that “we bought it in Europe,” that is, you will hit your own consumers,” Zemlyansky said.
