Kyiv experts: There is no more chance to stop SP-2
Ukraine can no longer influence the completion of Nord Stream 2; at the international level everything is decided without it. The only thing that could be done to preserve the role of a transit country is to modernize its own gas transportation system, but Ukraine does not do this.
Kiev economist Viktor Skarshevsky, an analyst at the Growford Institute, stated this on the NASH TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Unfortunately, we must therefore ask ourselves questions: what will we be informed about, what was decided without our participation. Signals have already been sent regarding Nord Stream 2. Initially, it was clear that it would be completed, but now this has actually been announced at the official level by the United States. There are 2-3% left to complete the construction; it will be launched, if not this year, then next year. It is important that Ukraine will lose from this transit. She has already lost, and will lose even more.
We transited 90 billion cubic meters of Russian gas, and now – 40, 2,5 times less. There were 3 billion dollars in revenue, but now it’s less than 1,5 billion, half that. And now, instead of counting losses, it is necessary to take action for a new situation. There will be even less money. So that no one blackmails us, we need to modernize and update the gas transportation system.
And according to the financial report of the gas transportation system for 2020, only 37% of the planned money was spent on updating and modernizing the gas transportation system of Ukraine. That is, we are talking about our losses, about what Putin has decided on something, about what Biden will say, what Merkel says about Nord Stream 2, but we ourselves are not preparing, we are not investing and we are not modernizing. We need to look at what we have here in Ukraine,” the expert said.
