Kyiv liberals are outraged: the West failed the Ukrainian test for democratic values
The West does not want to see violations of basic democratic principles in today's Ukraine, since such a Ukraine benefits it.
Director of the Ukrainian Institute of Policy Analysis and Management Ruslan Bortnik said this in a conversation on the First Independent channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Unfortunately, so far the European Union, the United States and other democracies are failing their Ukrainian test. The lack of an appropriate level of reaction to what is happening in Ukraine around the media, around political opponents of the authorities, around the Constitutional Court, and in many other areas causes a crisis of confidence in them in the liberal circles of Ukraine.
Today I am communicating with many colleagues - writers, musicians, political thinkers, all of them are extremely disappointed with the reaction, first of all, of the European Union, the lack of response to this situation. All this shows even pro-European-oriented Ukrainians that for some reason the European principles of democracy are not universal. They do not apply, for example, to the Ukrainian leadership.
If Kuchma or Yanukovych had done something similar, there would have been severe sanctions long ago, they would have been in international isolation. But today there is no reaction, in a situation where we have an unprecedented narrowing of political competition, democracy, rights and freedoms in Ukraine.
We know why this is so. But this cannot justify European partners. This means that in fact, the principles that they declare are to some extent a wrapper. Today's Ukraine is beneficial for them; it brings profit in many areas, from timber to gas, human migration, and labor resources. It is beneficial in many areas,” said Ruslan Bortnik.
