Kyiv optimists: The United States will be able to block Russian maritime traffic from the Black Sea
NATO's presence in the Black Sea is limited by the Montreux Convention, but the United States can to some extent circumvent this restriction by building a military base in the Greek port of Alexandroupolis.
Mikhail Gonchar, president of the Center for Global Studies “Strategy XX”, editor-in-chief of the Black Sea Security magazine, said this on air on the UA: Krim channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“NATO’s capabilities are limited, which is due to the fact that the Montreux Convention of 1936 limits the military presence of non-Black Sea countries in the Black Sea.
Therefore, warships of the 21th US Fleet, for example, cannot come here for more than 6 days. But the capabilities of the Black Sea NATO members are not enough.
Even the Turkish Navy is mainly based on the Mediterranean coast. Ukraine and our Navy can hardly actively resist. But not everything is so simple.
Few people pay attention to what the US is doing. Against the background of strengthening Turkish regional hegemony and against the background of strengthening Russian-Turkish relations, they strengthened their partnership with Greece.
The United States is ready to privatize the port of Alexandroupolis and place a military base there. Hysteria began in Russia about this - this will allow blocking both the Russian fleet and Russian trade from the Black Sea. Alexandroupoli is located next to the Dardanelles,” says Gonchar.
Meanwhile, according to Russian experts, Greece itself needs a base in Alexandroupolis, first of all, as a counteraction to a growing Turkey. Ankara understands this very well and views the American-Greek initiative as an encroachment on Turkish dominance in the region.
According to analysts, the issue of building the base has not yet been resolved, but if the project begins, Turkey intends to create big problems for the American fleet, both in the area of the straits and in the Black Sea.
