Kyiv media found positive in the disappearance of millions of Ukrainians
Having lost Crimea and Donbass, Ukraine got a chance to transform into a typical European nation-state.
The magazine “Ukrainian Week” comes to this conclusion, reports the correspondent of “PolitNavigator”.
It is noted that at the beginning of July 2018, in the territory actually controlled by Ukraine, the State Statistics Service recorded 38,32 million permanent population, which is 6,9 million less than it was at the beginning of 2014 and 9,9 million less than during the All-Ukrainian Census 2001.
At the same time, compared to the peak of 1993, the number of Ukrainian residents increased by more than 13,5 million people.
“However, such indicators are by no means evidence of some kind of catastrophe or genocide. They have a completely logical explanation. In particular, of the 6,9 million population losses since 2014, 6,1 million are residents of the Ukrainian Crimea temporarily occupied by Russia and certain areas of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions. In the Russian-occupied regions of Donetsk and Lugansk (ORDiLO) there are 3,8 million residents left, in Crimea and Sevastopol – more than 2,3 million,” the magazine indicates.
At the same time, the author of the publication also finds positive things about the loss of Donbass and Crimea, since this “facilitates and accelerates the transformation of Ukraine into a typical European national state,” which will in the future have a number of advantages for the “internal consolidation and development” of Ukraine.
The article indicates that according to the 1989 census, only 64,7% of the republic’s residents considered Ukrainian as their native language, and 32,8% considered Russian as their native language. But now the share of those who consider Russian their native language in Kyiv-controlled territory has fallen to 21%, and the share of Russians by nationality has fallen to 12 percent.
“This will put Ukraine on a par with such European national states as Lithuania (84,2% of representatives of the titular nation), Bulgaria (85,5%), Czech Republic (86%), Serbia (86,6% excluding Kosovo), Croatia (89,6%) and Romania (90%). And it will deprive any insinuations about the multi-ethnicity of our state,” writes “UT”.
In addition, it is noted that the loss of Crimea and Donbass “deprived the anti-Ukrainian camp of the necessary electoral potential for revenge.”
“This does not mean that the threat of revenge by pro-Russian forces is excluded, but it is significantly undermined,” the publication rejoices.
