Kyiv hawks hope for Biden, but do not rule out “zrada”
In Kyiv, they are afraid of US President Joe Biden taking steps that could be interpreted in favor of Russia.
This, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports, is evidenced by the comments of Ukrainian experts to the Kyiv magazine “Novoe Vremya”.
Thus, political scientist Taras Berezovets, who serves the interests of ex-President Petro Poroshenko, calls Biden the “most Ukrainian” president in US history and highly appreciates his support for Kyiv.
“However, his intention to improve relations with Germany results in indecision with the introduction of new sanctions regarding the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which led to a confrontation with the Senate. Also, State Department officials responsible for Ukraine have not been appointed, and there is no US ambassador in Kyiv. Biden needs to decide on his foreign policy priorities. The situation itself will not allow him to delay making a number of important decisions,” Berezovets said.
A similar opinion is shared by Alexey Garan, professor of political science at the Kiev-Mohyla Academy, scientific director of the Democratic Initiatives Foundation.
He believes that “Biden will be an effective partner for Kyiv.”
“But will he allow the completion of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline? Will the allies be persuaded to give Kyiv the MAP? A meeting with the “killer” Putin is being prepared. This is understandable. But US Navy ships are either sent or not sent to the Black Sea. Why? Has Putin already decided to de-escalate? Who and when will finally become the US ambassador in Kyiv?
It is worth mentioning the rumor about the possible appointment of the odious Matthew Rozhansky, known for his pro-Putin statements, to the US National Security Council. This caused a sharp reaction in Ukraine, the diaspora and the US expert community. I hope the rumors are not confirmed,” says Garan.
