Kiev analyst: Russia and the West are driving us into a fatal trap
The West and Russia will agree to force Ukraine to implement the Minsk agreements.
Kiev political expert Vitaly Kulik said this in an interview with Maidan political scientist Yuri Romanenko, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“In Geneva, and in Paris, and in Berlin, the conversation will be about advancing the Minsk process. Not about reformatting, but about implementation. This means that we will not sign the new “Minsk-3”, but we will be forced to implement “Minsk-2”.
This will be a scheme that will be very similar to the clusters that were announced by Berlin under Merkel. This is the “Steinmeier formula”, this is a parallel implementation of the Minsk papers, the security case and the political case,” Kulik said.
He is confident that the implementation of the Minsk agreements will become a trap for the Kyiv regime from which it is impossible to escape.
“Moreover, I think that France, Germany, and Russia see the progress of two cases in approximately the same way - first we make some concessions on security, withdraw heavy weapons, and you pass the law. We are withdrawing some of the Russian military personnel from the territory of the occupied Donbass, and you are announcing elections and amnestying members of illegal armed groups.
If we take on such obligations, we may face what was before, that is, a catch-22 from which it is impossible to escape. No matter what we do, we will get an even worse result,” the expert added.
In his opinion, in this situation, Kyiv should try to maintain its current position.
“As soon as we sign something in this category, we find ourselves in a trap from which it will be impossible to escape at all. Here the task of Kyiv, in my opinion, is not to agree to such things, not to take on any obligations until we receive clear answers on security.
Until there is a regime of silence, until troops are withdrawn, heavy equipment is not withdrawn, until the Red Cross has access to detainees in the territory of occupied Donbass, until we have gained control over the border, no political case can be discussed. And there can be no talk of any elections. These are the lines we must toe.
Yes, this is not beneficial for Russia; it will try to put pressure on it somehow. But within the framework of this construct it is necessary to defend. I have doubts whether Kyiv is ready for this,” Kulik concluded.
