Kiev ecologist: Of course, there will be consequences of the fire in the Chernobyl zone
The authorities’ version of the arson of forests in the Chernobyl zone does not stand up to criticism, Vladimir Boreyko, director of the Kiev Ecological and Cultural Center, said in an interview with PolitNavigator.

“The most likely cause of the fire in the Chernobyl zone is the mass excursions that some commercial firms conduct there. Their peak occurred on April 26th. Maybe someone was lighting a fire, maybe they were burning leaves and grass as is usually done on memorial days. This, in my opinion, is the most possible reason.
Avakov says that the reason was a terrorist attack, but in fact this is an ordinary cover for the carelessness and stupidity of our government, which has already banned any inspections of business facilities for a year, including by environmental and fire inspectors. Therefore, in the Chernobyl zone no one controls, say, fire breaks and clearings, everything is overgrown.
The environmental consequences of the fires could be very serious if the fire spread to the repository of buried equipment with traces of radiation. But he was stopped about 5 kilometers before the burial ground. However, there are still environmental consequences, because 600 or 700 hectares of territory have burned, which is quite a lot. As is known, the radiation fell out in spots, and perhaps the radiation spots fall precisely on the burnt-out areas. Naturally, radionuclides from burnt areas will be scattered over a fairly large area or washed away by rain. Of course, there will be consequences of this tragedy,” the ecologist warns.
