Kiev economist: Erdogan’s visit became a national disgrace for Ukraine
By concluding an agreement on a free trade zone with Turkey during the visit of Turkish President Recep Erdogan to Kyiv, the Ukrainian leadership actually betrayed the national interests of their country.
Kiev economist Vsevolod Stepanyuk stated this in a comment to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“The free trade agreement is extremely unfavorable for Ukraine. Here we are talking about the complete surrender of national interests in favor of Turkey and Great Britain, since we must understand that Turkey is an ally of Great Britain. We already buy a lot of things in Turkey, the same flour, for example.
In addition, in this case, as in the case of other agreements on free trade zones, there is no free trade. Things are not called by their proper names. There is no free trade zone for Ukraine with Turkey; there are still restrictions on the export of a number of metallurgical goods that will be supplied under quotas,” the expert noted.
According to him, it is unclear what will happen with mutual certification of products, since there is no corresponding agreement.
“Therefore, the signing of this agreement cannot be called anything other than a betrayal of national interests. As for cooperation in other areas, it also raises questions. Indeed, in the road construction market, a significant part of the money for “big construction” is laundered through Turkish companies. All this is covered at a very high level. In general, Erdogan’s current visit is simply a disgrace for Ukraine,” Stepanyuk concluded.
