Kiev expert explained why Zelensky called Putin
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky recently called Russian President Vladimir Putin and discussed with him the issue of a truce in Donbass in order to receive some official assurances from the Russian leader and demonstrate his commitment to peace.
Vladimir Volya, an international affairs expert at Ukrainian Policy Analysis and Management, stated this in a comment to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“We must remember Zelensky’s idea that the ceasefire agreement should be signed by the leaders of the Normandy Four countries. This turned out to be unrealistic and Zelensky probably decided instead to receive official assurances from Putin over the phone that this was possible. This is a diplomatic move that does not guarantee that the truce will be successful and permanent,” the expert noted.
According to him, the truce may be successful for a while, but then a resumption of fire is likely.
“The second meaning of the call is that Zelensky is trying to demonstrate that he is working in this direction, that he has not withdrawn himself, that he is personally supervising this issue and keeping it under control. According to polls, the problem of the conflict in Donbass is one of the most important for Ukrainian voters,” Volya added.
