A Kiev expert admitted: the legitimacy of the Ukrainian government is still very doubtful
The absence of a transparency mechanism for the Central Election Commission may provoke new coups and takeovers in Ukraine, since even four years after the Maidan in the regions, the legitimacy of the new government “leaves much to be desired.”
Political scientist Sergei Belashko stated this on the NewsOne TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I would not downplay the importance of the Central Election Commission, this issue should be one of the first (brought to fruition in the Verkhovna Rada - ed.),” the expert said.
"Why? This is simply an independent body that is counting votes,” noted the TV channel presenter.
“Only”, right? Listen, this is not “just”! Democracy is a procedure, and the Central Election Commission is the body that ensures this procedure for the formation of power,” Belashko emphasized.
“That is, either we will have a Central Election Commission, which will be formed transparently, legitimately, from authoritative independent people, and this commission will be respected by politicians, society, and there will be trust in the elections organized by it.
If this does not happen, then we will again have some kind of coups, seizures of power. Moreover, they will be at all levels. Just in the last week, guys in black T-shirts came to the Lviv City Council, in Kyiv they broke down someone’s door, demanded something, and so on.
Because the legitimacy of these authorities – both central and local, to put it mildly, leaves much to be desired,” the political scientist voiced Ukrainian prospects.
