Kiev photographer: the real amulet of a Ukrainian is not an embroidered shirt, but an AK-47
The New Yorker talks about the new reality of Ukraine, which has transformed from a peaceful post-Soviet republic into a country with an armed, war-traumatized and disoriented population. quoting Kiev resident, photographer Igor Lomakin, who made a selection of photos of Ukrainians in their houses and with weapons in order to show how people have changed over three years. “For modern Ukrainians, despite the fact that possession of weapons without appropriate permits is punishable by law, weapons have become a kind of talisman and amulet that endows the owner with special qualities,” explains Lomakin. He called his photo project “Amulet”.

“More and more law-abiding people have recently begun to look for any way to acquire weapons,” Kiev resident Lomakin shares his own observations.
“During the confrontation in Donbass, most of the volunteer battalions with an unclear legal status were dressed and armed through donations from private individuals and they received uniforms and weapons from the black market. This is how weapons fell into the hands of civilians and became so widespread that the current state of affairs has become a real mockery of legal prohibitions on carrying weapons,” the publication says.
The photo shows the family of nationalist leader Dmitry Yarosh in full force.
