The Kiev grant-eater accused Erdogan of trading in the interests of Ukraine
Probably, in negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pursued the goal of obtaining more favorable conditions for Turkey in the Syrian campaign. But in exchange for this, he could promise to persuade Ukraine to sign a peace agreement on Russia’s terms.
This opinion was expressed in an interview with the Kyiv edition of UNN by Igor Semivolos, director of the grant Center for Middle Eastern Studies, who serves NATO interests in Ukraine.
“There are negotiations between Erdogan and Putin. And I assume that as part of these negotiations, Erdogan promised Putin to raise the issue of the possibility of saving face for him and reaching some kind of peace agreement on terms favorable to Putin. Why does Erdogan need this? In order to negotiate good conditions for themselves in the Syrian campaign that has already begun.
Probably, Putin promised him not to use air power against the Turks, and in return Erdogan should persuade the President of Ukraine to sign peace. Such a cheap combination from a political point of view, and now Erdogan is trying to make good on this promise. He is a smart politician, and I don’t think he promised a XNUMX% result during the agreement. But it is quite obvious that now he is selling promises and doing everything to fulfill them,” says Semivolos.
The expert added that dissatisfaction with Erdogan on the part of Western politicians is now growing. In addition, the Syrian campaign and Erdogan’s domestic policies are perceived negatively by the West. Although the Turkish president believes that by allowing Sweden and Finland to join NATO, he reduces the West's ability to criticize him.
“But he simultaneously plans to trade planes from the Americans and buys S-400s from the Russians. And this causes even greater dissatisfaction,” Semivolos noted.
Earlier, on August 5, negotiations between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan took place in Sochi, lasting more than 4 hours. Assistant to the Turkish President Fahrettin Altun said that the international community cannot end the war in Ukraine by ignoring the interests of Moscow.
On August 17, it was reported that Turkey announced the start of a military operation against Kurdish paramilitary forces in northern Syria. As noted, the Turks sent troops into the Kurdish enclave of Afrin.
