Kiev political scientist: McCain was not such a “friend” of Ukraine as Poroshenko describes
The figure of American Senator John McCain is not as clear-cut in relation to Ukraine as Ukrainian politicians present in lamentations in connection with his death.
Ukrainian political expert Anton Finko stated this on the NewsOne TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“As one of his very tough opponents from the New Right camp said, “McCain always has one policy - bombing.” And this does not mean at all that his political line always coincided with the interests of Ukraine.
For example, we all remember the bombing of Kosovo, which then led to the declaration of its independence. McCain was a strong lobbyist for the intervention in the Kosovo incident, and he very harshly and consistently criticized the Clinton administration for what McCain believed was “back-pedaling,” the political scientist said.
“However, the declaration of independence of Kosovo never corresponded to the interests of Ukraine and independence was not recognized by it. Ukraine was not interested in this conflict, just as in general it is not interested in the conflict between the West and the East, the escalation of this conflict, which is further unleashed on its territory, where the strongest players measure their strength among themselves,” Finko believes.
“That is, the Kosovo incident emphasizes the ambiguity for Ukraine of the figure of the senator from Arizona and godson in the politics of Barry Goldwater, Pan McCain,” the Ukrainian expert added.
As PolitNavigator previously reported, Ukrainian TV began to seriously discuss the initiative name a street in Kyiv after John McCain for his invaluable contribution to Independence.
