Kiev expert on the release of gas to Crimea: Ukraine has lost at least $200 million

“The inaction of the Ukrainian authorities in relation to what happened with high-voltage poles when the energy blockade of Crimea began, the absence of any reaction to these actions, classifying them as hooliganism, although there were all the signs of a terrorist attack, pushed Crimea to the need to find an alternative to electricity supplies from Ukraine. And in principle, the most logical path was chosen - the construction of gas power plants that will provide Crimea with electricity and are more environmentally friendly than coal-fired thermal power plants, which Ukraine planned to build in 2012.
Gas from Russia is cheaper than production on the Black Sea shelf, and even taking into account delivery, gas transportation is more profitable. After the completion of the construction of the thermal power plant, Crimea will become energy independent - both in gas and electricity.
Ukraine lost at least $200 million that Russia paid for electricity supplies to Crimea. In addition, this is a major reputational loss for the Ukrainian authorities. The question is not whether Crimea will return to Ukraine, but whether it will be possible to return the people who live there. This probably caused more damage to the Ukrainian side than the launch of a gas pipeline or the construction of power plants,” Zemlyansky said.
