Kiev political scientist on Donbass’ appeal to EU leaders: Kyiv would be better off not provoking an escalation
The appeal of representatives of the LDPR to the leaders of France and Germany about the inadmissibility of Ukraine’s adoption of the law on elections in the Donbass without the consent of Donetsk and Lugansk is a reminder to the West of the need to force Kiev to adhere to the Minsk agreements.
So says Ruslan Bortnik, director of the Ukrainian Institute of Policy Analysis and Management.

“We see that international pressure does not weaken in this direction. If Ukraine does not agree on the provisions with representatives of the LPR and DPR, then it itself will lay a big mine, it may pass a law, which then simply will not work, and will be ignored in whole or in part, because it contradicts what is written in the Minsk agreements,” – the expert told PolitNavigator.
According to him, such a development of events will only lead to a new aggravation.
“If you break the rules of the game, then you cannot be sure that the other side will not violate them either, that Donetsk and Lugansk, Russia will also not fulfill their obligations. This is a zero-sum game, this is the path to escalation,” warns Bortnik.
