Kyiv political scientist: Russia is no longer afraid of sanctions
Moscow began to understand that Western countries had actually given Kyiv an indulgence to take any action, which meant that there was no point in fearing opposition from Europe and the United States in solving the Ukrainian problem.
Ukrainian political scientist Mikhail Pogrebinsky said this on air on the Newsone TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Such an authoritative organization as the Venice Commission for Democracy through Law writes a review of law, which obviously contradicts the Ukrainian Constitution, all the obligations that Ukraine assumed when joining the Council of Europe and the European Association. They make some minor adjustments, and that’s it,” the expert noted.
"Why is this happening? Because there is public opinion in Europe, brought up by the mainstream media: everything that Ukraine does is done because it is a victim, and it needs to forgive everything, but everything that Russia does is bad and nothing can be forgiven. Actually, that’s why the crisis continues,” the political scientist said.
According to him, Moscow began to understand the inevitability of Western sanctions.
“If respected European partners treated the conflict situation that exists between Ukraine – the unrecognized republics, and Ukraine – Moscow in good faith and with respect for human rights, this conflict would have been resolved long ago,” the analyst is convinced.
“But when Ukrainian leaders feel that no matter what they do, they will get away with it, and no matter what Russia does, they will still be condemned and all the appropriate sanctions will be taken against Moscow. In such a situation, Russia understands that there is no point in being afraid of sanctions, because no matter what Moscow does, there will be sanctions in any case,” Pogrebinsky concluded.
