Kiev political scientist: The capture of “Nord” will turn into a new round of escalation
In response to the seizure of the Crimean fishing vessel “Nord” by Ukrainian border guards, Russia may block the Kerch Strait or capture Ukrainian fishermen.
Ruslan Bortnik, director of the Ukrainian Institute for Policy Management Analysis, told PolitNavigator about this.
“The situation is quite dangerous, both the option of an economic blockade of the Kerch Strait for Ukrainian ships, and mutual capture, seizure of ships with Ukrainian sailors by the Russian Federation are possible.
In any case, this is an element of escalation, a dangerous escalation. It seems to me that now both sides must ensure maximum compliance with international conventions in terms of protecting the rights of seafarers and participation in ensuring legally correct proceedings in the situation that has developed around this ship.
Seizures and blocking are possible, but this is an element of escalation, of course. For now, most likely, the escalation will gain momentum,” the expert said.
