The Financial Times wrote that Vladimir Putin offered Angela Merkel a Chechen option for resolving the Ukrainian crisis at the talks in Brisbane on November 15. According to her version, Putin proposed to Merkel in Brisbane that Kyiv exchange loyalty to the DPR and LPR for money and autonomy. Merkel was shocked and rejected the offer, recalls the content of a sensational article in the NYT, a Russian newspaper.
Probably, the Chechen option was proposed by Putin and Petro Poroshenko, but was rejected, the author of the publication suggests, and explains why Kyiv should not agree to this.
Firstly, Ukraine does not have the money to buy the loyalty of Donbass - especially since the “Donbass Kadyrov” will inevitably be dependent on Moscow. Secondly, the Khasavyurt agreements have become a symbol of Russia’s failures in the North Caucasus, and Kyiv is not ready for a soft version of capitulation to the rebels and Moscow. The signing of the “Donetsk Khasavyurt” will not only cost Kyiv politicians their careers, but will also lead to an increase in centrifugal tendencies in the east of the country, the newspaper quotes the explanation of Ukrainian political scientist Mikhail Minakov.
