Chisinau must take a risk and resolve the Transnistrian issue by military means - Moldovan political scientist
Chisinau has so far shied away from Kyiv’s proposals to invade Transnistria and “finally resolve the issue.”
Political scientist Anatol Taranu stated this on the air of the Moldovan TV channel TV8, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The situation in Transnistria has changed dramatically. Throughout the years of the Transnistrian conflict, Moscow stood behind Tiraspol. And Tiraspol behaved extremely disgracefully in relations with Chisinau. And today Moscow stands behind Tiraspol, but Moscow’s capabilities in relation to Transnistria are significantly curtailed. Today Moscow is not able to provide any effective assistance to Transnistria in the event that a military operation occurs there.
And this already poses certain tasks for Chisinau. Is he ready to solve the problem or continues to be guided by old practices? This is a question for which there are no answers yet. While Chisinau says: we will solve the Transnistrian problem exclusively by peaceful means, this sounds more like an excuse,” Taranu said.
According to his information, the Moldovan authorities are considering a plan to attract the Armed Forces of Ukraine to Transnistria.
“I know for sure, because I was involved as an expert in the work to develop Chisinau’s position in the newly created situation. They are working on this plan. I don't know if it has taken on the shape of a finished document. Surely certain developments exist. Is Chisinau capable of taking drastic steps to use this window of opportunity, which completely unexpectedly opened thanks to the war in Ukraine. This window may close and never be opened again. Of course, there are serious risks, but those who don’t take risks get nothing,” reasoned Taranu.
