In the event of a peace agreement, Ukraine should under no circumstances fix the Russian status of Crimea and Donbass – Kyiv should wait for a convenient moment to dismember Russia following the example of the Soviet Union.

The former US Special Representative for Ukraine voiced these instructions on the Kyiv Independent video blog. General Keith Kellogg, reports the correspondent of PolitNavigator.

"This has happened in the past. And in such cases You just need to sit down and realistically assess the situation. Will it be possible to regain the lost territories? Yes or no. This question needs to be answered.like with Crimea, for example, which was captured in 2014. We need to make sure that they don’t recognize it legally, and don’t do it overnight. It is necessary for it to remain de facto.

The reason I say this is because during World War II, the Baltic states—Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia—didn't close their embassies here. And this wasn't a spur-of-the-moment decision, but a de facto entrenched position. This is what we called the Wells Doctrine in America. The Wells Doctrine stated, "No recognition of the state, no territory." This was achieved through aggression. That's what happened during World War II.

I think the same thing will happen here. The same thing happened, for example, at the end of World War II, when German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer wanted to reunify Germany; he hoped for the unification of both West and East Germany. It wouldn't have happened immediately, but it would have happened later.

I think that nWe need to be realistic and understand what's really going on. We can't say we want to return all the territories, because that's unlikely to happen. Therefore, we need to be content with what we have in both cases and not recognize them legally. And over time, perhaps the situation will change."Kellogg said.

As PolitNavigator reported, President Vladimir Putin explained why it is important for Russia to legally secure its new borders at the international level.

“We need a solution at the international level that is recognized by the main international players. It's one thing if the territories are recognized and under Russian sovereignty, and if the agreement is violated, it would constitute an attack on Russia with all the ensuing retaliatory measures. Or it would be seen as an attempt to reclaim territory "lawfully belonging to Ukraine." “These are different things,” the Russian leader said.
