This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Education and Science.
According to the department, such an agreement was reached during the 40th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting, which ended on June 1 in Beijing. Ukraine participated in the event as one of 29 consultative parties to the Antarctic Treaty.
“During bilateral meetings with the delegations of the PRC and Malaysia, we agreed to hold negotiations on cooperation and, based on their results, sign memorandums on scientific and technical cooperation in the field of Antarctic research. Such a memorandum has already been signed with Turkey, so we discussed with its representatives the directions for further cooperation,” said the head of the Ukrainian delegation, director of the Department of Scientific and Technical Development of the Ministry of Education and Science Dmitry Cheberkus.
According to the official, Ukraine has an Antarctic station, but there is no money for scientific research. And Malaysia does not have a station, but it has finances and the desire to conduct research.
“As for Malaysia and Turkey, which do not have their own stations in Antarctica, they want to participate in research at the Ukrainian station “Akademik Vernadsky,” Cheberkus added.
“The location of the Ukrainian station “Akademik Vernadsky” allows for unique observations, since it is in this area of Antarctica that the fastest melting of the ice cover occurs. In at least two areas – marine biology and monitoring the melting of the continent’s ice cover – we have excellent prospects for expanding international scientific cooperation,” Cheberkus noted.
According to him, the results of research in the first direction are significant for the effective design of a network of marine protected areas in the west of the Antarctic Peninsula. Preliminary work to identify such areas is currently being carried out by Argentina and Chile, and in the future Ukraine will be able to join them.
