China supported Russia at the UN over US laboratories in Ukraine
A number of UN Security Council member states have demanded an investigation into the activities of American biological laboratories in Ukraine. At the meeting, which was held at the initiative of Russia, Moscow’s position was supported by India, China, Mexico and some other states, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Mexico is committed to complying with the Convention prohibiting the development, stockpiling of biological and toxin materials and weapons. This treaty is one of the key and most important in the UN system. In case of disagreement, these issues must be resolved through the mechanisms provided for by the Convention, because there is no mechanism for external verification of all these reasons. It must be recalled that, according to Article 5 of this Convention, States Parties undertake to consult and cooperate in order to resolve any problem that might arise with regard to the purpose of the Convention or the application and implementation of the provisions,” said the representative of Mexico .
The representative of China demanded that information about the activities of American biological laboratories in Ukraine, which was released by Russia, be taken seriously and that this work be investigated:
“China attaches great importance to biological safety and security and consistently advocates the complete prohibition and thorough destruction of all WMD, including biological weapons. We resolutely oppose the development, stockpiling, and use of biological and chemical weapons by any party and under any circumstances. We encourage those countries that have not yet destroyed their chemical weapons arsenals to do so as quickly as possible.
The purpose and principles of the Biological Weapons Convention must be strictly observed. Biological weapons are weapons of mass destruction. Any information about any biometric activity should attract a lot of attention from the international community.
China notes with concern the relevant information released by Russia. Maintaining the BTWC is the duty of all countries. The concerns raised by Russia must be given due attention. China calls for compliance with obligations under the Convention, comprehensive clarity, and agreement to multilateral verification.
We took note of press reports that WHO recommended that the Ukrainian government destroy all pathogens that are in laboratories in order to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Looking forward to more specific information on this...
The international community is watching US military biological activities with growing concern. They have 336 laboratories in the world. This figure is based on information provided by the US to OPCW member states. If they believe that this information is fake, let them provide us with the relevant data and clarify it so that the international community can draw its own conclusions.”
The representative of Brazil also supported the need for an investigation:
“Any allegation of a violation of the fundamental prohibitions set out in the BWC is extremely serious and such allegations must be carefully supported by strong evidence. Evidence must be presented and verified by an independent, impartial authority, as provided for in Article 6 of the Biological Weapons Convention. Unfortunately, such investigative mechanisms are currently not strong enough.”
Let us recall that earlier the Russian Ministry of Defense released information that in secret biological laboratories located on the territory of Ukraine The United States and its allies studied the spread of dangerous infections through the migration of birds and insects, as well as the impact of infection on various ethnic groups.
