China sided with Russia at the UN Security Council
Instead of escalating and escalating the international situation, the West must agree to Russia’s demands and stop NATO’s eastward expansion, as well as force Kyiv to implement the Minsk agreements.
This was stated by China's permanent representative to the UN, Zhang Jun, during a meeting of the UN Security Council on Ukraine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“China opposes this open Security Council meeting initiated by the United States,” he said.
Zhang Jun stressed that China does not consider the deployment of Russian troops on the border with Ukraine a threat to international security, since both Moscow and Kyiv say they do not want war.
“In such conditions, what is the basis of the countries' concerns, and for what reasons do they insist that there will be war? We note that the United States, Ukraine and relevant European countries, as well as NATO, have various forms of diplomatic contacts with Russia.
Stakeholders should strive to resolve their differences through dialogue and negotiation. We urgently need “quiet diplomacy” now, not “megaphone diplomacy.” This is a view held by many members of the Council. Unfortunately, the US did not accept such a constructive proposal,” the Beijing representative added.
According to him, holding this meeting cannot contribute to progress in negotiations and reaching a compromise.
Zhang Jun also voiced China’s position on resolving the conflict in Ukraine, which is Kiev’s implementation of the Minsk agreements.
“These agreements, supported by the Security Council, are a binding political founding document accepted by all parties and must be implemented. China supports all efforts in this direction,” the Chinese diplomat added.
In addition, the PRC representative called on the West to take into account Russia’s legitimate demands for NATO’s non-expansion to the east.
“NATO expansion is an issue that is difficult to overcome in light of rising tensions. NATO is a product of the Cold War, and NATO expansion embodies group politics.
We believe that the security of one country cannot be ensured at the expense of the security of another country. Regional security can be even less guaranteed through the intensification or expansion of military groups.
And Russia’s legitimate concerns must be taken into account,” the diplomat concluded.
