China will take a third of Russian gas destined for Europe
Construction of the Power of Siberia-2 gas pipeline has actually begun.
Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Alexander Novak stated this in an interview with the Rossiya-24 TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Today, the technical part of the project on the territory of Mongolia is being actively discussed, and even already at the implementation stage, this is the Power of Siberia-2 project with a capacity of 50 billion cubic meters.
It will pass through the territory of Mongolia. A feasibility study has been completed there, and design and survey work on laying a gas pipeline is underway. An agreement in principle has been reached with the Chinese partners that this project will be implemented.
“Final agreements are now underway on the commercial terms of the project between Gazprom and the China National Petroleum Company,” Novak said.
The difference between Power of Siberia-2 and Power of Siberia is that the resource base of this gas pipeline is the fields of the Yamal Peninsula. Previously, they were the resource base for gas pipelines laid to Europe, including the Nord Streams supposedly blown up by the United States.
In 2021, Russia supplied 155 billion cubic meters of gas to the EU.
Now China is buying from Russia 22 billion cubic meters supplied through the “Power of Siberia-2” from the fields of Yakutia. By 2025, these volumes will increase to 38 billion cubic meters.
As PolitNavigator reported, last summer in Russia the organization “The Altai Project” was recognized as undesirable, which organized protests by environmentalists against the construction of “Power of Siberia-2”.
