This opinion was stated by professor of history, representative of Harvard Business School, Harvard University Niall Ferguson during the meeting “Yalta European Strategy”.

According to him, in the spring he was in China, where he communicated with high-ranking officials who did not hide their joy at the entry of Crimea into Russia. They explained their attitude to this issue by the fact that such changes in geopolitics would weaken the Russian President.

“Now we will beat the Russians in gas negotiations,” Ferguson quoted his interlocutors as saying. “The Chinese were very happy. I must admit, they are better students of Real Politics than we are.”

A similar opinion was expressed by ex-vice chancellor Joschka Fischer: “The Chinese’s goal is to get a better gas price than the Europeans. Russia will give in to its interests if it starts negotiations with China.”
