The United States will not be able to achieve its goals on the Korean Peninsula with targeted strikes. and therefore they will have to move on to a ground operation against the DPRK.

This opinion in an interview Izvestia said the editor-in-chief of the magazine “Russia in Global Affairs”, chairman of the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy, director of scientific work at the Valdai Club Fyodor Lukyanov

“Kim believes that in America no one would risk starting a conflict whose outcome is unpredictable. Pyongyang is confident, firstly, that the Americans are bluffing. Secondly, that no matter how personally Kim Jong-un is treated in Moscow and Beijing, if it comes to escalation, he will not be left to the mercy of fate, simply to prevent Armageddon at his side. Whether these calculations are correct is a serious question,” the expert noted.

Answering a clarifying question about how Russia and China can help the DPRK, Lukyanov noted that a full-scale world war with exchanges of nuclear strikes, and not a one-time targeted use of such weapons, is still unlikely.

“The US can launch a massive air strike, but it must be followed by a ground operation designed to end the regime in Pyongyang. And this is where problems arise. The North Korean army is very backward in terms of technology (even in comparison with the armed forces of South Korea), but it is the fourth largest in the world. In addition, North Korea has been preparing for war for almost all the years of its existence. Of course, the North Koreans will not be able to defeat the Americans and their allies, but they will inflict very serious damage on their enemies. If they are somehow not defeated instantly and the conflict drags on, then it will become similar to the Korean War of 1950-1953. Volunteers and “vacationers” will come to the aid of the DPRK from China and Russia, supplies of military equipment will begin, and so on,” the international expert believes.

At the same time, he says that if the Americans strike exclusively at nuclear facilities, North Korea will not limit itself to some angry statements in response, but will strike at South Korea and Japan.

“In addition, we must understand that intelligence knows a lot, but does not know everything. Some objects may be hidden and will be used to restore the nuclear program. In general, it will all come down to the fact that the Americans will still have to launch a ground operation. And the advantage, so to speak, of the North Korean regime is that it does not care at all about human losses. And the USA is very worried. And I don’t think that American society after Afghanistan and Iraq is ready for a new war and sacrifices,” Lukyanov concluded.
