Klitschko triumphs: Kyiv replaced Friendship of Peoples with a hanged nationalist
Kiev continues to get rid of street names associated with Russia and the Soviet Union.
So, yesterday, deputies of the Kyiv City Council, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, renamed another 32 streets.
“The process of de-Russification in the capital continues. And this is important. Especially during the barbaric war with which Russia is trying to destroy Ukraine and freeze Ukrainians in winter. We must get rid of symbols and names associated with the aggressor country, remove old Soviet and Russian names from the capital of Ukraine forever.
Russia has no right to occupy our territory, our culture, to rewrite our history,” said the mayor of the city, Vitaliy Klitschko, after the meeting.
According to him, 237 city objects have already been renamed in the capital. Renaming occurs every month: in August - 95, in September - 40, in October - 40, in November - 12 streets, squares and alleys.
Today, in particular, the Boulevard of Friendship of Peoples has been renamed the boulevard of one of the founders of Ukrainian nationalism, Nikolai Mikhnovsky, who hanged himself in 1924 in Kyiv.
However, one of the renamings was in honor of the Soviet ace Ivan Kozhedub: the street of commander Kutuzov was named after him. At the same time, Suvorov Street was renamed after Sergei Kotenko, a colonel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine who died in March 2022.
It is worth noting that the street of Academician Grekov was renamed, whose works in Soviet times became the basis for the final approval in the state-political sense of the concept of “Kievan Rus”.
In addition, today the Kyiv authorities got rid of streets bearing the names of writers Prishvin, Dostoevsky, Soviet generals Tolbukhin, Kirponos, Potapov, Avdeenko.
