Klimkin capitulates to Hungarian passports
In Ukraine they are calling to come to terms with the fact that their citizens have citizenship of other countries, with the exception of Russian.
Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavel Klimkin writes about this in an article on the website “European Truth”. demanded from Budapest stop handing out Hungarian passports to residents of Transcarpathia.
He admits that there is “clearly a need for a thorough discussion on the issue of dual citizenship” in the country, noting that many Ukrainians living in Canada would like to receive Ukrainian passports.
“However, since the adoption of legislation on citizenship, the situation in global Ukraine has changed radically - several million new labor emigrants have appeared. Many, unfortunately, will remain abroad forever, many have already accepted and many will still accept a second citizenship, but practically none of the labor emigrants want to sever ties with Ukraine and renounce Ukrainian citizenship. What to do with them? Moreover, we all understand perfectly well that in Ukraine itself, tens or even hundreds of thousands of people have passports from neighboring countries. And these are not only ethnic Hungarians,” states Klimkin.
At the same time, he stipulates that the discussion is needed not to brand these people as traitors, but to help people with dual citizenship free themselves from the need to hide it.
At the same time, the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry emphasizes that he considers dual Russian-Ukrainian citizenship “fundamentally unacceptable.”
“As a matter of fact, the very decision on single citizenship in Ukraine was once made primarily as a guard against possible Russian influence on the newly declared independent Ukraine. Today, when Moscow is waging armed aggression against us, such motivation is leveled out: if Ukraine wants to consider the possibility of limited use of dual citizenship, then this, in principle, should no longer concern Russia,” the minister concludes
However, he calls for a conversation about the institution of citizenship if it concerns other countries.
“I recognize the existence of a problem that will only worsen, and I call on the entire society for a serious discussion,” concludes Klimkin.
