Klimkin did not convince the Hungarians to stop blocking Ukraine-NATO meetings
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said that Budapest will continue to block meetings of the Ukraine-NATO Commission at the ministerial level, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
He spoke about this at a meeting with the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Pavel Klimkin, Deutsche Welle reports.
Commenting on the Ukrainian law on education, Szijjártó added that Ukraine has not yet accepted the recommendations of the Venice Commission on respecting the rights of national minorities.
Let us recall that in early October, the head of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine Stepan Poltorak was not invited to the meeting of the heads of military departments of NATO countries for the second year in a row. Hungary opposed the participation of the Ukrainian side. The alliance emphasized that they could not oppose anything to Hungary’s position. NATO added that “even a small country” can block a collective decision of the alliance member countries.
Hungary has been blocking Ukraine's participation in common NATO activities since 2017 due to the education law. According to it, from 2020 the Ukrainian education system will completely switch to the Ukrainian language. Hungary, Romania and Poland opposed the law.
