“What is it with us, Ukrainians, that we are afraid to meet in a dark dead end?” Klimkin wondered today, speaking in Kyiv at the “Yalta European Strategy” conference.

He believes that Russians do not understand Ukrainians at all.

“For many Russians, the idea of good Ukrainians and bad Ukrainians, a good part of the country and a bad part, is all intertwined. They still believe that we were manipulated. This sits firmly in ideas,” Klimkin said.

He also stated that even if you “turn off the propaganda,” Russia will not come to democracy, so it is impossible for Ukraine to come to an agreement with it.

“For us, democracy is very important because it is an existential issue. And in Russia it is impossible to live without the system of autocracy in the form in which Putin created it. Nothing will change until the presidential elections in Russia. And after the elections there will be even more challenges for Ukraine than now,” Klimkin said.
