Klimkin explained why Europe suddenly needed Putin
The only option for Ukraine to return Donbass will be the so-called “grand deal” concluded between the Russian Federation and the West.
Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavel Klimkin stated this on air on the ICTV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to the diplomat, Russian leader Vladimir Putin today has no reason to “surrender” Donbass to Ukraine.
“The only way to return Donbass, if we want to return Donbass, I emphasize this, is a combination of sanctions pressure along with certain painful compromises and within the framework of a big, let’s call it a deal, Russia with the European Union and the United States. It’s just that there can be no agreement regarding Donbass, I’m telling you that for sure.
Putin, by definition, is not interested in such an agreement. Give me at least one reason now why Putin can make some compromises exclusively regarding Donbass. You won’t find any such reason,” Klimkin said.
At the same time, the former head of the diplomatic department emphasized that there are enough politicians in the European Union who are ready to conclude a “deal” with Russia.
“I see signs that the EU is ready to make a deal. Not all of the EU, but a significant part of it, would like a new security partnership with Russia. Not because everyone there unexpectedly fell in love with Putin, but because for the EU the mega-problems in the future are Africa, the Middle East and the fight against terrorism.
They believe that Russia can be used, I emphasize this, in this fight and due to this there can be a certain space for agreements. In order to jump into such a partnership, somehow Donbass needs to be resolved. But, of course, not at our expense, since there are people, politicians in the West who are ready to do this at our expense.
And just follow the logic that will really destroy the whole process. This also needs to be said. Also, in the States, things are not so simple. The results of voting in Congress say that there is 90 percent (support), but unfortunately it is no longer 100 percent, and this must be said honestly,” the ex-minister said.
