Klimkin boasted about how Ukraine deceived the whole world with the implementation of the Minsk agreements
Former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko agreed to the Minsk agreements in order to gain time in order to then take Donbass under full control of Kyiv.
Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavel Klimkin stated this on the Iceland TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Everyone now forgets that before Minsk-2 there was Minsk-1.” In the second Minsk, through the capture of Debaltsevo, Putin wanted to improve the conditions of the first Minsk. He partially succeeded because Poroshenko, understanding what was happening in Debaltseve, agreed to some things, for example, changing the Constitution.
Then, in the presence of Poroshenko, the Germans and the French, I said that this would never pass, and in those conditions there was no point in blaming anyone. In the end, we played it out politically and diplomatically; all these conditions were not realized.
When the second Minsk took place, at the summit it was decided to include representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, meetings began at the ministerial level, before that there were two rounds of negotiations with the Russians, Zurabov took part in it and Surkov actually gave commands for the negotiations. All these conditions were lifted,” Klimkin said.
The ex-minister also emphasized that Ukraine perceives the “special status” promised to Donbass as a transition period that will allow Kyiv to take full control over the territory.
“When we talk about special status, Russians understand it in one way, but we understand it as a certain temporary transition period that will be before clear control of the territory, Russia is not happy with this.
We have two completely different views regarding the Minsk agreements. That is why at the Normandy summit a road map was discussed that would fix the sequence of steps and guarantee their implementation. For two years, Russia has not been satisfied with these steps,” Klimkin concluded.
