Klimkin called on Western countries not to recognize Russian passports issued in Donbass
Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin sent letters to the heads of foreign affairs departments of “partner” countries demanding that they strengthen anti-Russian sanctions and refuse to recognize Russian passports issued in Donbass.
Press Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Katerina Zelenko announced this during a briefing, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I brought one document specifically for the briefing. This is a letter from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavel Klimkin to the heads of foreign affairs agencies of the EU, NATO and other partner countries.
“We are actually talking about a structured presentation of the Ukrainian position regarding illegal passporting in the occupied territories and related security threats, including with reference to similar precedents in other countries,” she said.
Katerina Zelenko also emphasized that by doing this, Ukraine officially calls on its “partners” not only to expand anti-Russian sanctions, but also to refuse to recognize Russian passports that will be or have already been issued in the “occupied” territory.
“The key point is that with this letter Ukraine officially calls on our partners to expand the sanctions track to counter Russian aggression by including the passport case. We count on clear and consistent support from the international community on the issue of non-recognition of passports.
These passports have been and will be issued to citizens of Ukraine in violation of international law and Ukrainian legislation. And, of course, we will demand and work to ensure that economic and personal sanctions are expanded in response to the Kremlin’s illegal actions in issuing Russian passports to Ukrainian citizens,” the spokeswoman added.
Earlier today, the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers recognized Russian passports issued in Donbass as invalid on the territory of Ukraine.
