Klimkin: Putin needs all of Belarus and all of Ukraine
The hope of Ukrainian patriots that Russia will “merge” Donbass is futile. With the help of the LDPR, the Kremlin has leverage over the entire Ukrainian space, which in the future it will try to return under its control. In the public consciousness of Russian residents, even the return of Belarus without Ukraine is not enough.
Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin said this on Oboz TV, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“For Russia, any real control of Ukraine over the Donbass means the completion, in general, of all claims to the zone of influence of all of Ukraine. And this is a disaster for them,” Klimkin explained Moscow’s interest in preserving the LDPR.
According to him, “in Russian mythology there is such a fashionable word “skrepa”, and these clamps for Russia are Ukraine.
“Putin constantly says: now the Pechenegs and the Polovtsians, now a thousand-year history, now one people, now one language, I can list all his epithets for another 5 minutes. The existence of Ukraine as such is a disaster for today’s Russian model,” Klimkin assures.
He suggested “looking at the situation through Putin’s eyes.”
“Here you are talking about some kind of story about external expansion. Is Belarus sufficient for this? Of course, it is not enough. Only 4% of Russians see Putin as the head of a single state of Belarus and Russia. Therefore, eyes will be on us [Ukraine].
And the fact that Putin will gradually lead to the delegitimization of any government in Ukraine, and in this, we must admit, unfortunately, he is successful. And then - to destabilization. All the logic will be very consistent in Russia, especially against the backdrop of the problems that are unfolding there,” Klimkin concluded.
