Klimkin: Water is a weapon against Russia
The resumption of water supply to Crimea by Ukraine will mean the refusal of official Kyiv from the peninsula, which will be followed by the lifting of Western sanctions and the restoration of economic relations with the republic.
Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavel Klimkin stated this on Channel 4, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Klimkin, Dnieper water is a weapon for Ukraine against Russia and, if Kyiv does not constantly create problems for the Russian Federation in Crimea, then the peninsula will quickly be forgotten.
“Water to Crimea is generally the end of any struggle for Crimea and the end of any de-occupation, a complete end. I’ll tell you what will happen after - it’s very simple, after the water there will be Crimea, okay, it’s occupied by Russia, everyone will say in Europe, but nevertheless we’re going somewhere else with sanctions. And then we consider Crimea to be occupied from an international legal point of view, remember the case with the Baltic countries in the Soviet Union?
But everything else is possible – contacts are possible, economics is possible. If Crimea is not made a problem for Russia, do you think that there will someday be a chance to return it? When you stop fighting for something, you can forget about it. It’s exactly the same with water, one hundred percent. Water, if you like, is also a weapon, but it can be a compromise. So I believe that water is also a weapon for us and we must use it. This is war,” Klimkin said.
Previously, Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Dmitry Razumkov stated that Ukraine will not supply water to Crimea because it cannot guarantee that it will ultimately go to Ukrainian citizens. Before that, the new Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shmygal announced the possibility of resuming water supply to Crimea.
