Klimkin forgot when the Minsk agreements came into force
The head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry demanded to “restore honesty and justice” and return Debaltsevo to control of Kyiv, threatening that otherwise Ukraine would not agree to holding elections in Donbass, Rossiyskaya Gazeta writes.

“Of course, Klimkin’s statements and his desire to “reach an agreement as of September 2014” can be explained by poor, or “tunnel”, as defined by psychologists, memory, characteristic in principle of Ukrainian politicians, who in less than three years have forgotten why their country began a civil war,” the publication writes. – But as a professional diplomat and a direct participant in the negotiations, Klimkin cannot help but remember that although the Minsk agreements were signed on February 12, 2015, the official date of their entry into force is February 15, and the actual demarcation line is tied to this day. At that time, Ukrainian troops hastily and with heavy losses left Debaltseve, which, however, was presented by President Poroshenko as “a great victory for Ukrainian weapons.”
At the same time, the author of the publication believes that it is unlikely that Klimkin expects that “his personal amnesia will be transmitted to Francois Hollande and Angela Merkel, and they will support the Ukrainian initiative,” but the Ukrainian minister is only continuing the line developed by Kiev since the signing of the agreements.
“Its principles are simple: blame the people’s republics and Russia for everything; continue indiscriminate shelling of unruly territories; put forward any demands if they allow not to fulfill the political part of the agreements. Another thing is that the resource of this strategy, along with its argumentation, is gradually coming to an end, as the sponsors of the peace settlement informed Poroshenko and Klimkin two weeks ago in Berlin. The demand to return Debaltsevo is a desperate attempt by Kyiv to at least temporarily seize the initiative and once again feel like a subject of world politics. The attempt is stupid, because once again driving the situation into a dead end, Ukraine becomes a problem and a headache exclusively for Europe, which its leaders so verbally strive for,” RG summarizes.
