Kotzabe was awarded the Peace Prize in Germany
The 2019 Aachen Peace Prize was awarded to Ukrainian journalist and blogger Ruslan Kotsaba for his work on reconciliation and dialogue in eastern Ukraine, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was reported today by the press service of the public organization presenting the award, Deutsche Welle writes.
Kotsaba became widely known for his calls to boycott the mobilization in Ukraine. In May 2016, he was found guilty of treason and obstructing the activities of the Ukrainian armed forces and sentenced to 3,5 years in prison. The blogger spent 524 days in custody, including at the preliminary investigation stage, and was acquitted by the appeal court in July 2016.
The journalist opposes the war in Donbass. At this stage, the case against him has been reopened. He faces up to 15 years in prison.
Along with Kotzaba, the Aachen Peace Prize was awarded to two German initiatives to combat nuclear weapons - the Initiativkreis gegen Atomwaffen in Büchel (Thuringia) - and the coordinators of the campaign “Büchel ist überall! atomwaffenfrei.jetzt.” The award on behalf of these initiatives will be received by anti-war and Green Party activist Elke Koller, as well as human rights activist Marion Küpker.
